Sony's PlayStation 4 was the top-selling platform for hardware sales in April for the fourth month in a row, according to the latest NPD Group data, followed by Microsoft's Xbox One.
Sony is yet to offer updated sales figures for the month. Citing NPD estimates, the company revealed last month that the PS4 was the top-selling console during March in the U.S. Sony also announced in April that it sold more than 7 million PS4 consoles worldwide since launching in November 2013.
Microsoft revealed earlier today that it moved 115,000 Xbox One units in the U.S. during April, according to NPD information, outpacing Xbox 360 sales by 76 percent in the first six months on the market. The older console shifted 71,000 units in April in the U.S., "more than any other seventh generation console." Microsoft moved an estimated 311,000 Xbox One consoles in March, according to NPD data, and more than 5 million units of the hardware to retailers since launch.
Titanfall was the best-selling game of April, according to the NPD Group. Publisher Electronic Arts revealed during an investor call earlier this month that it sold 925,000 copies of Respawn's multiplayer shooter during March, making it the best-selling game of the month. As the sales data quoted was drawn from the NPD Group, the figure doesn't include copies sold outside the U.S., or digital copies sold through Xbox Live and Origin.
"As seen in the past two months, overall spending in April 2014 across hardware, new physical software, and accessories were increased collectively versus April 2013," NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a prepared statement. "The 17 percent growth [year-over-year] was due to hardware and accessory growth, despite a 10 percent decline in new physical software."
