The Wonder of Gaming:
A Quick Rant
You know, it's becoming more and more apparent to me that the Phil Spencer mentality of "when we have something awesome to show, we'll show it" is the entire mentality of the Xbox One PR. There's no grand scheme to trick Sony or whatever people want to believe. It's simply, the games will show the tech. The games are the evidence, not some powerpoint, deep dive, or leaked document. And why is this approach so bad? Because knowledge is power? If you go see a magic show, do you feel disappointed if the magician doesn't reveal all of his tricks? Do you feel better knowing all the secrets behind the magic? Furthermore, who wants to know how the trick is done before the trick is even shown?
Maybe, just maybe Microsoft is trying to do something bigger than make games, consoles, or money... maybe they are trying to resurrect that magic that everyone once had when we saw games make their first jump to this-bit to that-bit, or from 2-D to 3-D worlds, or the first time we saw CGI in a video game, or the first time we saw slow motion in a game, or the first game that allowed us to interact with others in a big way. There used to be real magic in the gaming, for us gamers. But now we spend every waking moment trying to dissect hardware and APIs, rather than trying to fully experience the idea that CPU racers are driving just like you now, or how environments now react naturally to the weather, or how switching from games to apps to games is most likely faster than doing the same on a home computer. How about walking in front of your TV and saying "Xbox On" and it turning on to YOUR home screen.
We've become a generation of the unimpressed... where numbers on a sheet of paper gets more reaction than being able to go on a store page, look up a game, and click over one spot to watch someone playing that game live, in thumbnail, in realtime. This is crazy stuff that none of us should take for granted and it truly is magical stuff. Dare I say, if we just let Microsoft do their thing and stop obsessing over figuring out their secrets, their PR, and their sauces, maybe we may do something extraordinary and allow a sense of wonder back into our gaming experiences once again.
