This is a touchy subject to some Xbox gamers after the DRM fiasco of May through Gamescom of 2013. However, maybe we need to have a discussion about this for performance's sake of the Xbox One. Now we all know what was bad about the first iteration of DRM on the Xbox One. Always online, you didn't own the software you bought, and the lack of choice. We also know the good things we lost too, such as family and friend sharing. However, around E3 last year, I came up with a better idea that opened doors. They are as follows; - All your Xbox One games would have disc based DRM. This DRM's function is simple and unrestricted. It works like this:
- You must install your disc to your Xbox One Harddrive
- Once installed, you won't need to reinsert your disc unless you want to uninstall the game, at which point you can then resell the disc
- You can play all of your games without inserting your disc
- An online connection is not required as it would be a software based DRM system
Now what this allows Microsoft to do is enable those feature we lost with the hardware based DRM. Family Sharing could be brought back with Xbox Live Gold and maybe an Xbox Live Platinum service. This would allow those who decide to not go all digital to get the features that all digital players would get. What do you guys think?

No reason why Microsoft couldn't have had the best of both worlds....If you DL'd your game from the xbox store, family share and all that jazz would be available to you. You have to "check in" every 15-30 days(the 24 hour check-in was bs imo)
If you bought the game via retail, you are required to have the disk in to authenticate.
Or, why not just given people a choice. When you first put the disk in the console to install, you choose whether to fully install with online DRM authentication or install with disk based authentication requiring the disk to be in the console.
And in order to enjoy the sharing and what not, you would have to install with online DRM authentication. Choices is always best and IMO, Microsoft was extremely narrow-sighted in regards to this topic.

I would like to not have my only disc (Forza 5) always in my tray.
I also would like to be able to trade in a digital-only game on a marketplace so others can it get from me for a reduced price + the developer get a share from the difference from what I get and the reduced price for the buyer. As there is no abrasion to digital goods this would be a WIN-WIN-WIN deal for all participants.

Although MS did a poor job with presenting DRM, their plan never really bothered me. I very rarely trade games in (Unless there was added multipliers involved) because it never benefited me. They give you $8 and sell it for $30 and since my 360 disc drive was problematic, I very rarely traded for or purchased used games. I really want to go all digital, but they REALLY need to make it beneficial by selling digital games at least $10-12-15 cheaper than packaged!
I do like the idea of being able to trade digital games in the market place as mrzweistein suggests.

My whole premise is that as long as you have the game installed, your physical disc isn't needed unless you plan on trading it in at some point. No more leaving the disc in. What's the point of having the disc in the drive when you installed the game on the hard drive? That's stupid. That is an outdated system. My way keep gamers happy and Gamestop happy.

As for a digit-only retrade market, I have no idea if that would hurt Gamestop's feelings and then they stop supporting the X1 product. I'm sure Microsoft considered it with their original vision for DRM. They certainly would have had to have that in place.

As for the price of a trade in, you should lose 10-15 dollars off the current price. That'd be about fair.

Im ok with drm if it is time limited. For example even this generation i cannot play borderlands series if not online. The game just does not see the saves. If drm checks every two hours or one hour, that would be enough

The thing is, what if you play offline? What's going to stop people from having installed a game on multiple offline Xbox's if you don't need the disk for DRM purposes hehe.

The Disc is useless after you install the game. That means it can't be installed anywhere else unless you re-enable the disc by re-inserting it and uninstalling the game.
